Always reliable for my commute

Another solid journey using an Anytime ticket I bought online. It's my go-to for my weekly trips to Manchester. Never had an issue getting my e-ticket, and the trains usually run on time. Consistency is key for me, and they deliver.

Good for Advance tickets, support okay

I purchased an Advance ticket for a trip from Leeds to Newcastle. Booking on the website was straightforward, picked my seats with no fuss. The e-ticket arrived promptly in my email. On the day, there was a slight delay but nothing major. Had a question about changing my return later, and customer service responded to my email within a day, which was decent. Quality of the train itself was standard, nothing fancy but comfortable enough for the journey. Wi-Fi was a bit spotty in places but generally usable.

Decent service, minor improvements needed

Booked an Off-peak ticket to visit family. The price was good, especially compared to driving. The website was easy enough to navigate to find the tickets. My e-ticket downloaded fine. The train was mostly on time, just a small 5-minute delay on arrival, which isn't terrible. My only small gripe is the seating; sometimes it feels a bit cramped, especially if the train is busy. A little more legroom would make a big difference for longer journeys. Overall, it's a solid choice for rail travel.

I'm planning a trip to Manchester from Leeds next month, pretty sure it's Northern or TransPennine. What's the real difference between them, like comfort or speed?

N Noor E. 1 month ago
Honestly, for that route, both are pretty similar. TPE can sometimes be a bit faster on certain services if they skip stops, but Northern's usually fine. Comfort wise, it's a bit of a toss-up, depends on the specific train you get.

TPE trains are often newer with better WiFi, but Northern has more services. If you have a choice, I usually go TPE but Northern is totally adequate.

Can I use my 16-25 Railcard with the Advance tickets? Or is it one or the other for discounts?

A Anna 1 month ago
You can totally stack 'em! Advance tickets give you a good price, then the Railcard knocks even more off. It's how I always book.

Yep, railcards work on top of most fares, including Advance ones. It's a sweet deal.

I'm trying to book a family trip, are those 'Kids for 2 pounds' tickets always available or is that a special offer type thing?

C Cleo 2 months ago
That's a pretty regular deal, especially with certain adult tickets like off-peak. Usually, up to 4 kids can travel for £2 each with a fare-paying adult. Check the specific ticket details though.

It's generally always on for most off-peak family travel. Good way to save some cash.

Does Northern do those flash sales very often? Waiting for a good deal for a trip in a few months.

N Noor W. 1 month ago
They pop up occasionally, especially around holidays or off-peak times. Best to keep an eye on their site or sign up for emails.

Not super frequent for big flash sales, but Advance tickets are always a good shout if you know your dates. Sometimes they have specific route deals too.

what's the cancellation policy if I book an Advance ticket and then my plans change? can I get a refund or change the date?

J June 2 months ago
Advance tickets are pretty strict, usually non-refundable. You *might* be able to change the date, but there's often an admin fee and you'd pay any difference in fare. It's not like a flexible ticket at all.

Nah, Advance tickets are basically locked in. If your plans change, you're usually out of luck for a refund. Sometimes you can swap dates for a fee, but it's not guaranteed.
